In The Shadows: Unknown Craftsmen of Bengal
"In The Shadows: Unknown craftsmen of Bengal" is a book of stories, of enterprise among the rural craftsmen of villages of West Bengal. It depicts places where the rural economy is hinged on a rather unusual activity — while one cluster of craftsmen churn out wigs another lights….poloballs….boats….shuttlecocks….jeans…. In this book one of the most expert editorial photographers of India, Leena Kejriwal tells human stories of these unknown craftsmen as never told before. Here is what the artist says about the book:
It was a very interesting experience following Payal Mohanka through all these villages and discovering all the entrepreneurial activities going on amidst the lush green and laid back countryside. Payal had earlier done four minute capsules on each of these activities for the India Business Report on BBC World Service Television.
The book was published by Niyogi Books in 2007.
